Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been seeking help from NATO members since the Russian invasion. He declared Ukraine’s airspace a “no-fly zone” and demanded warplanes from allies.
However, NATO did not respond to Zelensky’s two demands “to avoid a direct confrontation” with Russia. However, NATO and European countries have been helping Kiev with arms and money. Germany has followed the same path, moving away from its long-standing policy.
Ukraine’s president has softened his stance on joining the NATO alliance since the start of the Russian offensive. He says Kiev is willing to withdraw from the military alliance once security is assured.
However, the Kremlin offered some more conditions to end the war. These include the recognition of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and the recognition of Russian-backed separatist-controlled Luhansk and Donetsk as independent states.
Ukraine’s president has said he is ready to hold direct talks with President Vladimir Putin on “all issues” and that a referendum could be held on Crimea and the Danube region. However, analysts do not expect the Ukrainian people to vote in favor of the Kremlin in the referendum.
