Ex-Prime Minister of Italy called the stoppage of gas supplies to Europe “dangerous” for Russia

Former Prime Minister of Italy, ex-President of the European Commission Romano Prodi believes that Moscow will make a big mistake if it decides to stop gas supplies to Europe.
“We really need their gas, there is no doubt about that. But the Russians really need to sell it. If they turned off the faucet, it would take them a long time to open it again. And for them it would be suicide. Large objects do not work with a switch,” the former head of the Italian government said in an interview with the newspaper la Repubblica.
According to Prodi, Italy is able to turn to gas fields in the Adriatic Sea, but it will take a year and a half to develop them. According to the ex-premier, the country urgently needs other suppliers of blue fuel.
Prodi also said that he welcomes Washington’s proposal to increase gas exports to Europe, but said that American producers are selling it at a market price, which is “very high” today. “I hope there will be an opportunity to get energy in a more diversified and manageable way,” he added.
