The Madrid team said in a statement on the club’s website on Friday that Azar would undergo surgery in the next few days to remove his right fibular osteosynthesis plate. There was no word on how long it would take him to return to the field.
The 31-year-old has not played for Real for more than a month. He last played in the last five minutes of the team’s 3-0 win over Alavs in La Liga on 19 February.
Although he has been on the bench in every match since then, he has not had a chance in the XI. Coach Carlo Ancelotti did not even name him in the team’s 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Clasico on Sunday.
He has been named in the starting XI in just eight of the 21 matches played for the club this season.
Azar’s career has been plagued by injuries since he joined Real from Chelsea in July 2019. He has played only 65 matches for the Santiago Bernabeu team this season due to a number of injuries.
Real will return to the field with a match against Celta Vigo in the league on April 2 after the international break.
