Prime Minister De Croo: ‘Russia’s economic power is already weakening’

According to Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, European sanctions are already having a clear impact on Russia. But will we also feel its impact in our country. He therefore wants to take measures in the coming days. He said that in The morning on Radio 1.
Economic power in Russia is already weakening. That is what Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) said on Radio 1 on Saturday . ‘We use our economic power against aggression and blind violence. Europe has an economic power that we have used very little in the past. But now you see the impact we have if we do use it. And it is almost instantaneous. The ruble has halved in value in a few days,” he said. ‘The Russian economy, which is the size of the Benelux, is weakening strongly. And historically, you can’t be a military power if you don’t have economic power either. In that way we are actually making the war in Ukraine very difficult for them to some extent.’
The Prime Minister assured that various measures will be taken in our country in the coming days to deal with, for example, the high gas and fuel prices. But he still wants to be careful with that. ‘As a government, I don’t have infinitely deep pockets. You cannot expect the government to take on a large part of the bill, because then we will ruin the government. I want our government to be sufficiently healthy after this crisis.’
