Spiegel: West dumbfounded by Putin’s gas maneuver

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to transfer payments for natural gas for unfriendly countries into rubles has caused nervousness in Western energy markets. This is reported by the German edition of Spiegel .
The material says that this gas maneuver showed confusion in the boards of European energy concerns and the ministries of economy of the countries of the European Union. In an interview with the magazine, economist Jens Südekum said that Putin managed to “stupefy the West.” The article also says that the President of the Russian Federation forced the representatives of Western countries to “frown their foreheads.”
“So Putin is forcing us to circumvent our own sanctions,” Südekum said.
A few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to issue a directive to change the currency of payments for gas exports in currently valid contracts for rubles. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, commenting on this decision, said that the contracts for the supply of blue fuel provide for payment in dollars or euros.
