According to a French military source speaking to the French news agency AFP, ‘Syria was actually a small theater for Russia’. The Syrian war provided the Russians with a training opportunity in terms of testing weapons, gaining combat experience. Although Russia legitimately entered the war in Syria, it intervened in Ukraine by using the republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which declared independence unilaterally.
