Russia, the world’s second-largest power, has launched a military operation in neighboring Ukraine. Since the military operation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sought warplanes from the United States and NATO. However, despite the urgent request, the US and NATO have repeatedly rejected Zelensky’s request. This time the United States has stated the reason for denying the matter.
Separate reports from CNN and CNBC News raised the issue of not providing warplanes to Ukraine.
According to the report, US war experts believe that the Russian military needs more surface-to-air missiles than Ukrainian warplanes. As a result, the United States is supplying surface-to-air missiles to the country without sending warplanes.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Ukraine had found effective ground-to-air defense to counter Russia’s efficient air force. We will continue to supply surface-to-air missiles to our Ukrainian allies. They need these weapons to counter the threat of shelling from Russian rockets and artillery.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that Ukraine had “several squadrons” of its own “fully mission-capable” aircraft. Sending more of this military equipment from the United States would only add fuel to the fire of confrontation between the two sides. “It is our responsibility to do what we can and what needs to be done to stop the conflict and prevent it from escalating,” he told a news conference.
For these reasons, the proposal to send MiG fighter jets to Ukraine using US bases has been rejected. The US State Department rejected the offer last Thursday.
However, since the beginning of the Russian military operation, Ukraine’s president has been urging Western leaders to send warplanes to strengthen the country’s air force and defend against Russian attacks. However, Poland offered to supply the country with Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets. But the United States has rejected that offer.
